May 22, 1802: Martha Washington, wife of George Washington and the nation’s first First Lady, died in Mount Vernon. Martha was widowed at 25 after her first husband, Daniel Parke Custis, passed away. She met George Washington when she was 26 and married him in 1759. The couple had no children, but raised Martha’s two children from her previous marriage together. Called Lady Washington, Martha was known for her hostessing abilities as well as for her caring nature. She eventually became the first American woman honored on a U.S. postage stamp.
