May 24, 2001: Temba Tsheri, a Sherpa from Dolkha, Nepal, climbed Mount Everest, becoming the youngest person ever to scale the mountain at 16 years and 14 days old. He first began attempting to climb Everest in April 2000 at age 14, but several bouts of bad weather kept him from completing the climb. He made a second attempt in April 2001 from the Tibet side. During his climb, he lost five fingers to frostbite. His record was broken in May 2010 by an American Teenager, Jordan Romero, who was 13.
