Veteran newsman Lou Dobbs gave his final broadcast on CNN last night. Dobbs, who signed onto CNN at its inception in 1980, told viewers he was leaving the network to pursue new opportunities. His contract was not set to expire until the end of 2011, but Dobbs said CNN had agreed to release him from his contract early. He has hosted “Lou Dobbs Tonight” since 2001 during the network’s 7 p.m. newshour. Dobbs will continue to host his nationally syndicated radio programs, “Lou Dobbs Financial Report” and the “Lou Dobbs Show.” Replacing him is “State of the Union” host and political correspondent John King, who will take over the time slot early next year.
CNN is a 24-hour cable news network that covers breaking news across the globe, with an emphasis on the White House, Capitol Hill, business news and breaking national and international news.

Cable network Current has cancelled three of its original programs and cut 80 staffers associated with those shows. Short-form programs “Current Tonight,” “Current Exposed” and “Current Takeover” were cut in order to make room for more-traditional 30 to 60 minute programs. Current executives say that although they are moving away from shorter pieces, the network remains committed to its interactive, multi-screen format.
Current is an independent cable and satellite TV network. The programming follows the global pulse via Google Current, a real-time view of what the world's searching for, presented every half-hour around the clock.

CNN is making major changes at its Atlanta headquarters. Network executives recently announced that CNN Productions, which made documentaries such as “Black in America” and “Latino in America,” will combine with the investigative unit. Senior executive producer Mark Nelson, who has overseen CNN Productions since 2005, is leaving the network and Scott Matthews, current live programming director, will take over the combined production/investigative unit. In addition, correspondent Soledad O’Brien’s “In America” series will be expanded into its own separate division in 2010. CNN executives say these changes will create jobs at the network.
CNN is a 24-hour cable news network that covers national and international news as well as business, entertainment, political and other news happenings.

Starting Nov. 1, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and Stephens Media will enter into a joint operating agreement (JOA) under the new moniker, Northwest Arkansas Newspapers LLC. Stephens Media, which publishes the Morning News in Springdale and Rogers, will lead local editorial coverage for all the papers including the Benton County Daily Record in Bentonville, while the Democrat-Gazette will manage the business and production of the papers. The second edition of Abasto, covering the Hispanic food supply and restaurant industry, was released this month. Launched in July, the publication targets Hispanic business owners and features business advice, product reviews, and information about restaurant technology. Veteran news anchor Bob Kendrick will take over as a primary evening anchor at sister stations WSYX and WTTE on Oct. 26. He replaces Gabe Spiegel on the 5, 6, 10 and 11 p.m. newscasts. Kendrick previously worked at CHEK-TV in Victoria, British Columbia and CBS’ KUSA-TV in Denver, Colo. Spiegel’s last day is Oct. 23. The station has not announced the reason behind Spiegel’s departure.
WSYX-TV is an ABC affiliate and WTTE-TV is a Fox affiliate. Both stations serve the Columbus, Ohio viewing area.

BusinessWeek editor in chief Stephen J. Adler announced his resignation in a memo yesterday. He will officially leave the magazine in early December when the sale of the magazine to Bloomberg LP is complete. Adler has been editor at the publication for over four years. Under his guidance, BusinessWeek established an investigative reporting unit and won over 100 awards for journalism. Norman Pearlstine, Bloomberg’s chief content officer, will choose the next editor in chief.

Long time deputy editor Ellen Seidman was let go from Glamour magazine yesterday, with further cuts expected to come from parent company Condé Nast. She is one of about a dozen that were released in the last week. So far, the company has cut about 400 jobs this year, with layoffs having reached as far as Vogue and Vanity Fair. More drastically, Condé Nast recently shuttered Gourmet, Modern Bride, Elegant Bride and Cookie.

The publication targets consumers, educators and families, and serves as an international source of news and information on various aspects of food production, safety and quality. Topics frequently covered include food borne illnesses, food safety, food recalls, nutrition, food law and beverages. The Web site also features content that specifically covers food-related illnesses and foreign objects found in food. It is led by managing editor Mansour Samadpour and online editor Katie Wallace.
