Five Social Media Tips for Cyber Monday Marketing

The Monday after Thanksgiving was first dubbed “Cyber Monday” in 2005. At the time, Facebook was still in its early stages and Twitter had yet to arrive on the scene. Fast forward to 2012, and what once was the 12th largest online shopping day of the year has become the #1 online sales day, with sales reaching $1.25 billion last year.

The skyrocketing popularity of social media has played a major role in Cyber Monday’s shift to online shopping supremacy. Scott Silverman, the co-founder and VP of Marketing for Ifeelgoods, Inc, agrees.

“I believe the growth of social media and the importance of Cyber Monday are correlated,” he says .”Peer-to-peer sharing of deals and owned marketing channels like Facebook pages and Twitter accounts are bringing promotions directly to where users spend their time online.”

That means that your business needs to be ready to share this information or risk being left in the dust by competitors. Here are five ways to ramp up your social media marketing this Cyber Monday:

1.       Coupon Codes

Create different coupon codes for each social media platform, so you can track where traffic is coming from. This will help you gauge the effectiveness of your social media outreach and help you mold future projects.

2.       Be Creative

Keep in mind that most, if not all of your competition will also be offering deals on social media. Be innovative with your efforts, so you can stand out from the pack.

For instance, use Instagram to your advantage and post pictures of the items you are selling with the original price and the marked down price. Include the percentage off, as this will give your customers a visualization of the sale. Also, this could induce FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) in your customers and drive them to action (a sale.)

3.       Reward Current Followers

Word of mouth is a powerful influencer, especially when it comes to converting sales and when it comes to obtaining new customers. Your current customers must be happy with your business and your services, in order to spread the good word about your company.

Tweet or post on Facebook a code prior to Cyber Monday that your current customers can gain early access to the sales you will be offering. Additionally, you can run a contest on your social media platforms that will give a winner (or winners) a bigger discount than you will be offering on Cyber Monday. Not only will this reward your current customers, but it will also be an incentive for your followers to engage with your business on social media and spread positive reviews to potential new customers.

4.       Attract New Followers

A great way to attract new followers on social media is to offer a discount code to someone if they like your Facebook page or begin to follow you on Twitter. Some argue that the new followers will only do so to get the discount and will not become vested in your company. This may be true, but this also gives you the opportunity to interact with these new followers in the future. The potential of new customers and future sales is worth offering the discount.

5.       Piggyback Cyber Monday to get In-Store Sales

People are more inclined to buy items when they see the physical item in front of them. Piggyback Cyber Monday sales to get in-Store sales by offering two separate discounts. Meaning, offer a certain percentage off your items online on Cyber Monday and then offer a bigger percentage off if the customer comes in to the store after Cyber Monday. This offer will get customers in your store and give you the opportunity to sell more than you would have before.
