Allen Powell II is a crime and courts reporter for the New Orleans Edition of The Advocate. He previously worked at the Times-Picayune, where he was a member of the reporting team that covered Hurricane Katrina, resulting in a Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. Prior to that, he worked at the St. Paul Pioneer Press as a crime and local government reporter. In addition to his current role at The Advocate, he also serves as a contributor to SlamOnline, a site that provides the latest trends in basketball.
Powell was awarded the Howard Simons Graduate Fellowship in 2002-2003 from The Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, College Park. He has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and sports management from Howard University, and a master’s degree in journalism and public affairs from the University of Maryland.
